I have suggested that the danger of parties in the State, with particular reference to the founding of them on discrimination geography. Allow me now to a more global view, and warn of the most solemn manner against the harmful effects of party spirit in general. This spirit, unfortunately, is inseparable from our nature, which has its root in the strongest passions of the human spirit. That exists in different forms in all governments, more or less stifled, controlled, or repressed, but in those of popular form, is considered in its most exuberant and really is your worst enemy …. It serves always to distract the public councils and weaken the government. It agitates the community with ill founded jealousies and false alarms, turn on the animosity of one part against another, occasionally encouraged riots and insurrection.
He was right, but very few people can rise above having to be in a "team" and feel they have to "win" and all the public good will be condemned. Washington also was the only president slave to free all his slaves in his will.
